More than Two Tons of Candy Donated To Kool Smiles Halloween Treats for Toys Exchange Benefiting Troops

Dec 09, 2013

Kool Smiles, a leading provider of quality dental care in underserved communities nationwide, today announce a record-breaking 4,054 pounds – more than two tons - of candy collected during its 2nd annual Operation Troop Treats. The program offers children the opportunity to trade in their Halloween candy for a choice of a toy at over 125 Kool Smiles or Resolution Dental Offices nationwide. The candy is being sent in care packages to U.S. troops serving overseas via Operation Gratitude

“Halloween treats can be especially rough on kids’ teeth, which is why for the second year we decided to offer a fun incentive to give up some of the sweet treats they collected this year,” said Kool Smiles Managing Dental Director D Ray Gifford, DDS. “With literally tons of candy collected this year, we were thrilled to see such an overwhelming display of support for the program and for our military members serving overseas.”

Kool Smiles and Resolution Dental are committed to supporting America’s men and women serving overseas. Several offices are located near military bases and the Kool Smiles family includes many active duty service men and women, military families, and veterans. This initiative is a small way for Kool Smiles and Resolution Dental to help share a smile with those who serve.

In 2012, more than one ton of candy was donated by children for the troops at Kool Smiles offices. This year’s collection doubled to over two tons of candy donated at offices nationwide.

In addition to the exchange program, Kool Smiles is donating 100 dental care packages for troops to Operation Gratitude, as well as the funds to cover the assembly and shipment of 200 care packages. Operation Gratitude is a 501(c)(3), volunteer-based organization that annually produces over 100,000 care packages for U.S. Service Members deployed in harm's way, their children left behind, Wounded Warriors, Veterans and First Responders. For the past six years, Operation Gratitude, through the Halloween Candy Buy-Back initiative, has encouraged dentists to collect Halloween candy from their patients for donation to the troops. The Kool Smiles program is the largest Candy Buy-Back effort by a dental organization participating on a national level.
