DMD vs. DDS | Is There a Difference?

If you are thinking about pursuing a career in the dental industry, you may be considering DMD vs. DDS degrees. Becoming a dentist is a dedicated effort, and choosing the right dental program seems like the key to future success in the profession. Whether you choose a DMD program or earn a DDS degree, your dentistry career options are wide open.

What is the Difference Between DDS and DMD?

Those seeking to pursue a career in dentistry must have a dental degree, either a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or a Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (DMD). Although these sound like completely different degrees, DDS and DMD programs are exactly the same. DMD and DDS degrees are both granted by dental schools, which a student typically attends after earning a bachelor's degree.

According to the American Dental Association:

"Dentists who have a DMD or DDS have the same education. It’s up to the universities to determine what degree is awarded, but both degrees use the same curriculum requirements."

This means that for DMD vs. DDS degrees, there is no right or wrong choice. Both doctors are able to perform all necessary functions of a general dentist, including:

  • Diagnostic exams
  • Annual cleanings and checkups
  • Diagnostic x-rays
  • Simple endodontic treatments
  • Treating dental diseases like gingivitis
  • Teaching about proper oral health and dental hygiene
