Norfolk is a modern port city with a lively arts and entertainment scene, a thriving economy, and a richly diverse culture.
With numerous waterways, a vibrant downtown, and plenty of trails and parks, there's always something new to do in Norfolk. Popular attractions include the the beaches at Ocean View Beach Park, the interactive exhibits at the Nauticus science center, and the USS Wisconsin, one of the last and greatest battleships ever built. For some crowds and excitement, check out one of the many festivals and parades held in downtown's Town Point Park.
Norfolk is the artistic and cultural heart of the Hampton Roads region. Home to the Virginia Opera, the Virginia Symphony, and the Virginia Stage Company, Norfolk boasts world-class theatrical and musical performances year round. The smaller venues along lower Granby Street offer a diversity of musical styles in a more intimate setting. For a taste of the visual arts, visit one of Norfolk's many museums and galleries, including the famed Chrysler Museum of Art and the historic Hermitage Foundation Museum.
Norfolk's award-winning public school system includes five high schools, eight middle schools, and 34 elementary schools. There are also a number of private and parochial schools located in the city, including the Norfolk Academy, founded in 1728. Norfolk is home to three public universities and one private college: Norfolk State University, Old Dominion University, Eastern Virginia Medical School, and Virginia Wesleyan College. Tidewater Community College offers associate degrees in arts and applied science.
With a bustling port, marinas, miles of beautiful beaches, and a bounty of rivers and lakes, Norfolk residents get to enjoy all that life on the water has to offer. Whether you want to be in the water, on the water, or overlooking it, you'll find that Norfolk truly has it all. From kayaking to fishing to sailing to harbor cruising, water activities are plentiful here on the waterfront. Norfolk also has a number of parks, walking trails, and green spaces, including a 155-acre botanical garden and arboretum.
Although Norfolk was founded in 1682, much of the town was burned to the ground during the Revolutionary War. Afterwards, the town was rebuilt, and many of those historic buildings and homes have been beautifully preserved, adding an old world charm to the city. A variety of architectural styles are present throughout Norfolk, from Federal style row houses with their Greco Roman columns, to the Gothic Revival homes with their characteristic pointed arches and round towers. The Ghent district in Norfolk (pictured) overlooks the Elizabeth River, and is well known for its tree-lined streets and stately historic homes.

Having the right dentist makes all the difference in the world. Our dentists share a common bond: they are passionate about providing quality dental care to families. All of our dentists go through Kool Smiles training upon hire and continue to receive company sponsored continuing education. Many of our dentists are active in both local, regional, or state dental associations, serve on Medicaid advisory boards, and participate in national associations such as American Dental Association and American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.
Kool Smiles is committed to expanding access to quality dentistry and oral healthcare services in underserved communities.
Lack of healthcare coverage, or being enrolled in the Medicaid program, should not undermine an individual’s access to vital dental services.
80% of the nation’s 179,000 practicing dentists refuse to provide care to Medicaid enrollees.
We’ve partnered extensively with local schools, daycares and community organizations to provide much-needed oral health screenings and supplies, free of charge. In 2012 alone, Kool Smiles provided over $18.5 million in dental services to children with no form of payment for those procedures, simply because it was in the best interest of the children and their health.
In addition to strong clinical oversight, Kool Smiles has implemented an advanced electronic health records (EHR) system that is used in every Kool Smiles office across the country to measure and report on clinical compliance. The system is closely monitored by our dental clinical leaders to assure all dentists are in compliance with professional standards as well as ADA and AAPD guidelines.
