Different Dental Careers | Jobs in Dentistry

If you're hoping to find a great job in the field of dentistry, it is important to understand all of the different dental careers that exist. Whether you are a licensed dentist or a non-medical professional hoping to find a new path, there are many different dental career options to choose from.

Career Options for Dentists

There are several different specialized dental careers that require training beyond dental school. Some of the most common career options for dentists include:

  • General dentists: General dentists act as the primary dental care provider. Patients see a general dentist for routine dental maintenance and cleaning, diagnostic exams, x-rays and much more. A general dentist will refer patients to a specialist when needed.
  • Cosmetic dentists: Cosmetic dentists work to improve the appearance of their patients' smiles. These dentists specialize in teeth whitening, cosmetic veneers and other procedures to make teeth appear more appealing.
  • Orthodontists: Orthodontists are specialized dentists who work primarily to help with problems of the jaw or teeth. Orthodontists can straighten and better align teeth using braces, retainers and a variety of other methods.
  • Peridontists: Peridontists are dentists who specialize in the health of teeth and gums.
  • Oral surgeons: Oral surgeons help patients with more severe dental issues that require surgery.

There are different types of dental career options aside from being a specialized dentist. Dental hygienists, dental assistants and laboratory technicians are all important members of the dental health team.

Dental Hygienist

Dental hygienists work alongside dentists to help take care of patients. These professionals can perform preventative maintenance on teeth and help dentists teach patients proper oral hygiene techniques. Some of the dental care that hygienists perform includes:

  • Routine cleanings
  • Fluoride treatments
  • Tartar removal
  • X-rays

Dental Assistant

Dental assistants work with dentists to help them perform different tasks throughout the day. Assistants work with dental patients but are not able to perform dental cleanings or diagnose cavities like a dental hygienist might.

Dental Laboratory Technician

Dental laboratory technicians help manufacture dental implements like crowns and other dental prostheses based on specifications set by the dentist. These professionals perform non-clinical work, which means that they work in a lab and do not work directly with the patients.
