Job Description of a General Dentist

General dentists have a wide range of job responsibilities, and the job description for many general dentists will vary each day according to the needs of their practice. Even so, there are certain dental duties that are universal due to their high level of importance.

Taking and Interpreting X-Rays

General dentists use X-rays in their jobs to catch early stages of tooth decay between teeth, which then gives them the ability to better form an effective treatment plan. X-rays also allow dentists to:

  • Detect broken bones that provide teeth with stability and structure
  • Locate teeth that are below the gums, most commonly referred to as "impacted teeth"
  • Discover cysts, tumors or abscesses
  • Prepare for intense cavity treatments and surgeries

Gum Disease Detection and Treatment

A very large component of a dentists general job description is finding and treating gum disease before it causes serious problems. A recent report revealed that 47.2% of adults 30 years of age and older have gum disease.

In a separate study, it was found that 42% of children ages 2-11 have gum disease. Clearly, the detection and treatment of such a widespread problem is important.

There are many ways a general dentist will treat gum disease, depending on it's severity. A general dentist's job description typically includes the non-surgical methods of dental cleaning, scaling and root planing.

For more severe types of gum disease, surgical treatment may be necessary. Oral surgery is not typically a job for a general dentist.

Dental Hygiene and Health Education

One of the most important parts of general dentist's job is to teach healthy oral care habits in order to prevent costly treatment as a result of poor dental hygiene:

  • Implementation of proper brushing techniques
  • Annual dental cleanings and check-ups
  • Treating teeth with fluoride
  • Daily flossing
  • Eating a well balanced diet
